The Quadratic Formula Song: A Math Teacher’s Secret Weapon
As math teachers, we know that memorizing formulas isn’t always the most exciting part of learning algebra. But sometimes, all it takes is the right approach to make something stick—and for me, that approach came in the form of a YouTube video back in 2007.
I was searching for a way to help my students memorize the quadratic formula, and what I found was absolute gold: a music video featuring rappers, dancing babies, Jedi knights, and even Brian and Stewie from Family Guy, all set to a catchy tune that repeats the quadratic formula over and over again.
The result? 2 minutes and 45 seconds of pure joy—and a classroom full of students who actually remember the quadratic formula.
The Power of Music and Repetition
Every year, after I’ve introduced the quadratic formula and given my students some practice using it, I cue up the video. At first, they watch with curiosity. Then, as the song plays, I can see the realization set in—the formula is being burned into their brains whether they like it or not.
And then comes my favorite part. After the first watch, I go around the room and ask random students to recite the quadratic formula. More often than not, they can say it without hesitation. If someone stumbles? We watch the video again.
By the second viewing, every student knows it.
This is the magic of music and repetition—something about the song just makes the formula unforgettable. It’s the earworm of algebra, and once it’s in their heads, it’s there for life.
Proof It Works (Straight from the YouTube Comments)
If you don’t believe me, take it from the hundreds of students who have left comments on YouTube:
“My teacher showed this to me and now it is burned into my brain lol.”
“Almost 15 years now since I saw this video Freshman year. This formula still lives rent free in my brain, and refuses to leave…”
“It has been over a decade since I heard this. I still remember the quadratic formula to this day because of this video. I will never forget. I cannot forget.”
It’s not just a classroom gimmick—it’s a teaching strategy that lasts for years. In fact, whenever I run into former students, one of the first things they ask me is:
"Do you still show that quadratic formula song?"
My answer? Yes. Every single year.
After all, if middle school boys are singing it in the locker room, you know it’s truly unforgettable.
Try It in Your Classroom (If You Dare!)
So, math teachers, you’ve been warned: If you watch this video, the quadratic formula will be stuck in your head forever. But if you’re willing to embrace the magic of music and memes, your students will thank you—maybe not today, but definitely when they ace their solving quadratics test.
Now, go forth and make the quadratic formula unforgettable! 🎶
